]]>#AMTA16 is just days away and we want to highlight some of the ways you can listen to, participate in and play MUSIC! After all, that is the reason we are all together. Music heals. Music inspires. Music motivates. Music educates. Music is THERAPEUTIC. Music ROCKS! You won’t want to miss any opportunity to make music with your friends, colleagues, mentors and a few Grammy-nominated musicians too!
OPENING SESSION: Did you hear?!? Jim Brickman, Grammy-nominated pianist and songwriter, is kicking off our a conference with a LIVE performance you won’t want to miss on Thursday at 7:30pm in Kilimanjaro 1,6. Learn more here.
CONFERENCE CHOIR: There’s nothing like singing with other music therapists to bring you inner and outer JOY. Join the choir for a rehearsal immediately following the Opening Session to prepare for a performance on Friday outside the Exhibit Hall at 1:45pm. Learn more here.
EXHIBIT HALL: This will open immediately following the Opening Session and for most of the conference. This is your chance to play ALL. THE. INSTRUMENTS. And dream or add to your music therapy collection. Test them out, play with friends and decide what fits your work best! The Exhibit hall will be held in the Kilimanjaro Ballroom.
JAM ROOMS: Gather with music therapy friends, students and colleagues to let loose and rock out together! The ROCK Jam room will be in Leopardwood and the UNPLUGGED Jam room will be Sagewood. Both will be open Thurs and Fri evenings from 11pm-2am. Who needs sleep at conference anyway?!
UKE CIRCLE: Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer have been staples at AMTA conferences for quite a few years now and they are back with TONS of Ukes and lots of great tunes. Bring your Uke or use one they have on hand to Kalahari B on Fri evening from 830-930pm.
DRUM CIRCLE: After the Uke circle you will DEFINITELY want to join in on the AMTA annual Drum Circle! If you’ve never been, this is a MUST! Grab a drum supplied by our awesome supporters (here’s looking’ at YOU REMO!) and be led by Carrie Jean Ekins and Hachya H. Franklin in Kilimanjaro Suites 1, 6 from 9-10pm on Friday night.
THE MUSIC THERAPIST UNPLUGGED: This event will be led by Joanne Loewy and it’s a time to SHARE MUSIC and how music relates to your work as a music therapist. Head to Kalahari A on Friday from 930pm-1230am for this in-depth music sharing event.
CHANT CIRCLE: will be led by the Daughters of Harriet, five music therapists that will lead you in singing and vocal exploration. No singing experience necessary. Join them on Saturday from 8-930pm in Cypress.
CABARET: is your chance to showcase your musical talents and unleash your originals, covers and musicianship how YOU want. Sign up at registration for a slot to perform and show up Saturday between 930pm-1am in Kalahari A.
CONFERENCE WRAP UP: will feature Top Hat Black, a local Cleveland group with two music therapists (and local committee members, rock on Sam Rodgers-Melnick and Seneca Block!). Enjoy this groups bluesy roots rock blend as we wrap up conference on Sunday from 12-1245pm in Kilimanjaro Suites 1, 6.
QUIET: Silence is also a VALUABLE part of music making and attending a conference buzzing with 1,500+ people! Sometimes it can get overwhelming and you need peace and quiet to regroup, detox, prepare or rest. Your hotel room can be a great place for this and there are plenty of large hallways, comfy couches and quiet nooks to explore.
Now, get working on your conference schedule and don’t forget to include time for making MUSIC!
]]>You don’t want to miss this {Conference Chair Presents} Collaboration under the Canopy: Bridging Art and Science in Music Therapy Part II- A Closer Examination of Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy & Neurologic Music Therapy on Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm in Kilimanjaro Suites 1, 6.

NRMT and NMT differ in some fundamental ways, with the former operating from primarily a creative, improvisational, and music-based perspective and the latter being built primarily on scientific principles. Build on the foundation established in 2015 by taking that conversation further in exploring the specific ways in which the two approaches are contrastive, complementary, and otherwise related to each other.

Raising our voices in song is one of the most powerful statements we can make. We need music for our own healing and to offer out to the world. Let’s see how many voices we can get to join together as the AMTA Conference Choir! We will rehearse after Opening Session on Thursday and then perform outside of the Exhibit Hall at 1:45 on Friday.
Note: the Choir is purposely scheduled at times to allow participation from those who come to conference and tend to work through every possible moment. It is an offering of a short break to sing with your colleagues. It is proof that a momentary musical pause can enliven and inspire our lives.
These are the songs we will sing. The YouTube versions will give you an idea of the songs only. Our arrangements will be slightly different.
2. This Is My Song by Sibelius/Stone
3. All The Good by Jana Stanfield*
*NOTE: we will need 4 soloists for this song. Please email me directly if you are interested and can sing in one of the following languages: Spanish, French, Arabic, Hebrew
Email [email protected] to learn more!

]]>#AMTA16 is 2 weeks from today! Oh behalf of the local and national planning committees, we can’t wait to welcome you to Sandusky, Ohio! Here are all the things you need to know as you plan, pack and prepare for #AMTA16!
The OFFICIAL CONFERENCE PROGRAM is here! Click the link or go to musictherapy.org/events and click the Conference Program (PDF Download) button under the conference logo. This is your one stop shop to access every event at conference.
JIM BRICKMAN!!! Have you heard?!?! The Grammy Nominated Pianist will be performing at Opening Session, Thursday, November 10th at 730pm. You won’t want to miss this! He is a huge supporter of Music Therapy a great musician and song writer and very funny!
What to bring: Northeast Ohio is typically cool this time of year. Since conference will take place very close to Lake Erie, we recommend packing layers (cardigans, scarves, etc) and bringing a Fall jacket if you plan to venture off site as it does get as low as the 40’s at night. If you plan to take advantage of the waterpark, pack your swimsuit, but no need to pack a towel as those are provided. There is a wonderland of indoor slides, pools, activities and a lazy river to enjoy in warmth! Also, consider bringing your device–Kalahari has FREE wifi everywhere and it’s good. Lastly, bring some cash! Opening Night the Exhibit Hall will be jam packed with vendors and the Take-A-Chance Raffle, where you can win an array of awesome swag with all proceeds benefiting AMTA.
What to do at Kalahari and the surrounding Sandusky area: The hospitality team has curated a plethora of things to see and places to get good eats both on and off site. Be sure to check out the attractions page, dining page and venue page so you can plan your meals and activities with your colleagues and friends! You can also check out our AMTA16 Pinterest page here for direct links to restaurants and reservations. They will also have a booth set up by the registration table with coupons and general information about the area.
How to get around: if you haven’t figured out how to get around Sandusky or are still planning your travel arrangements from CLE Airport to Kalahari, be sure to check out the Travel page for information on rides all over the NE Ohio area.
Still interested in CMTE’s? Check out all the CMTE Spotlight posts on this blog and consider adding one to your schedule!
#AMTA16 – be sure to tag your Instagram, FB, and Twitter posts with the hashtag #AMTA16 so music therapists at conference and around the world can stay up to date on conference!
Travel safe and we will see you in 2 weeks or less!
